*DEFINITION*
Under the direction of the Administrative Director of Maintenance, Operations, & Transportation or designee, drive a school bus to transport students safely and efficiently to assigned locations along designated routes; assure safety of vehicle by performing daily safety inspections and cleaning duties; picks up and delivers food, equipment, materials, and supplies; performs general custodial work.
Assists grounds and maintenance personnel; and other related duties as assigned.
_*Trainees working toward a school bus driver Certification may perform utility working tasks as directed while actively engaged in the BOUSD Bus Driver certificated training program.
*_ *ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES *include the following.
Other duties may be assigned.
* Drive a school bus along designated routes; pick up and discharge students in accordance with established time lines; observe legal and defensive driving practices; assure compliance with applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.
* Maintain order and discipline among passengers on the bus and while waiting at bus stops in accordance with District policies related to disciplining students; report behavior issues to appropriate personnel; assure student understanding of bus rules.
* Conduct required daily safety inspections of buses; inspect the interior, exterior and engine of buses to assure safe operational condition; check brakes, brake lights, doors and other equipment; report mechanical malfunctions or other problems as required; maintain related records.
* Maintain buses in a clean and safe operating condition; clean windows, mirrors and bus interior and exterior; sweep and mop floors; dust furniture; perform minor repairs on seats and other bus equipment; utilize basic hand tools; check and maintain fuel, oil and water levels.
* Assist in the loading and unloading of physically and mentally handicapped students as required; assure students are safely fastened into their seats; utilize wheelchair lifts and tie-downs as necessary.
* Maintain various logs and records related to mileage and assigned activities; prepare routine student discipline reports as needed.
* Communicate with District personnel and outside agencies to exchange information and resolve issues or concerns.
* Transport students and faculty on field trips or other special events as assigned; meet scheduled departure and arrival times.
* Determine appropriate action in emergency situations according to established guidelines; administer first aid to passengers as needed.
* Pick up and deliver food, equipment, materials, supplies, and mail.
* Load and unload trucks with supplies and equipment.
* Receive materials, equipment, and supplies, deliver purchase order items to storage areas and check merchandise received against the order.
* Perform general custodial work, including securing access at any district property.
* Move, arrange, and set up furniture and equipment.
* May assist grounds and maintenance personnel with tasks that may require the use of power tools.
* _*Trainees will perform required tasks and engage in necessary training to obtain a Bus Driver Certification, Class I and Class II*_ *QUALIFICATONS* EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: * Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high.
* Three years’ experience driving a motor vehicle.
KNOWLEDGE OF: * Safe and defensive driving practices.
* Proper operation of school buses.
* Applicable traffic and student transportation laws, codes and regulations.
* Basic first aid procedures.
* Basic record-keeping techniques.
* Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
* Health and safety regulations.
* Oral and written communication skills.
ABILITY TO: * Drive a school bus safely and efficiently.
* Learn and apply District policies and procedures related to student discipline.
* Maintain a safe discipline level among passengers.
* Observe legal and defensive driving practices.
* Learn and follow designated routes.
* Maintain bus in clean and proper working condition.
* Conduct safety inspections and perform routine preventive maintenance.
* Administer first aid.
* Administer appropriate assistance in loading and unloading students with special needs.
* Maintain routine records.
* Understand and follow oral and written directions.
* Communicate effectively with others * Pass Federal mandatory drug and alcohol tests.
* Meet schedules and time lines.
* _*Obtain and maintain Class I and Class II Bus Driver license.
*_ LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: * Valid California Class A or B commercial driver’s license with passenger and air brake endorsements.
* Valid California School Bus Driver Certificate _*or the ability to obtain C Level or Class I and Class II within the probationary period.
*_ * Valid First Aid and CPR Certification issued by an authorized agency.
* Must pass DOT Drug and Alcohol Pre-Employment screening.
*WORKING CONDITIONS:* ENVIRONMENT: * School bus and outdoor environment.
* Exposure to fumes, dust, odors, oil/grease and gases.
* Driving a vehicle to conduct work.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: * Sitting for extended periods of time while operating buses.
* Hearing and speaking to exchange information.
* Reaching, pulling and pushing to open bus doors.
* Bending at the waist, kneeling or crouching to inspect and wash buses.
* Climbing ladders or steps.
* Reaching overhead, above the shoulders or horizontally.
* Seeing to monitor passengers and operate a vehicle.
* Lifting moderately heavy children or objects as assigned by the position.
* Persons performing in this classification will exert 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects.
HAZARDS: * Traffic hazards.
* Driving a vehicle during adverse weather conditions.
* Fumes from chemical cleansers and bus operation.
