JOB Connected By Amazing EmployeesThe City of Murrieta is accepting applications for the position of Geographic Information System (GIS) Technician to fill a vacancy in the Administrative Services Department.
The eligibility list established may be used to fill upcoming vacancies within this classification for up to one (1) year.
POSITIONThe GIS Technician is the entry level position in the multi-level GIS job family who is responsible for the creation and analysis of spatial data layers in a large spatial relational database system.
This position will create customized maps, data and applications along with compiling and integrating new cartographic data in the GIS data management process.
DEFINITIONUnder general supervision, performs technical work, ongoing maintenance, and dissemination of data and applications in the City’s Geographic Information System (GIS) environment.
Supports GIS programs and services, generates various maps and plots, and performs related duties as assigned.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISEDReceives general supervision from supervisory and management personnel.
May receive technical and functional direction from the Geographic Information Systems Analyst.
Exercises no direct supervision over staff.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICSThis technical-level classification performs routine support for specialized GIS database maintenance and map production tasks.
Performs routine and technical GIS duties in the development and maintenance of a citywide GIS system consisting of maps and databases.
As experience develops, the incumbent will perform assignments that will become more varied, complex, and difficult.
Incumbents work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
Positions at this level receive occasional instruction or assistance as new or unusual situations arise and are fully aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSManagement reserves the right to add, modify, change, or rescind the work assignments of different positions and to make reasonable accommodations so that qualified employees can perform the essential functions of the job.
Provides cartographic support for City departments and programs, including the development of maps, charts, displays, exhibits, presentations, graphics, and drawingsAssists in the entry of information in specific layers of the City’s GIS systemGathers and compiles data using GIS-related software required for map preparation; conducts mapping research to resolve conflicting information; ensures accuracy of the GIS dataUpdates standard maps and map books; creates custom web maps, print maps, and postersWorks with staff from all City Departments to prepare and update customized maps, diagrams, exhibits, and analytical reportsInterprets engineering plans, plat maps, and legal descriptions for GIS database development effortsOperates and maintains GIS-related hardware such as GPS equipment, plotters, scanners, workstations, and laptopsPerforms research of geographic and tabular data from public and private sources for integration into the City’s enterprise GIS system; provides updated information to external agencies as necessaryPrepares a variety of written correspondence, reports, procedures, and other accumulated data for input into GISStays abreast of new and emerging trends and changing technologies in the field of GIS; attends meetings and training as requiredPerforms related duties as assigned EXAMPLE OF DUTIES EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEAny combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying.
A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be: Equivalent to an associate degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in geographic information systems, computer science, or a closely related field or a certification in geographic information systems and One (1) year of technical experience in geographic information systems technical support, sub-professional drafting, or computer-aided design experienceLICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONSPossession of a valid California Class C driver’s license or other means that would allow the ability to commute to meetings or training, conduct site visits, and attend special eventsNECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSuccessfully pass a police background investigation SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION APPLICATION PROCEDUREA City application form and resume must be submitted online.

SELECTION PROCESSCandidates must clearly demonstrate through their application materials that they meet the employment standards outlined above.

Examinations for the position may consist of any combination of appraisal interviews, performance tests, written exams, and writing exercises to evaluate the applicant's skill, training, and experience for the position.

The selected candidate(s) must successfully complete pre-employment clearances, which include a pre-hire physical and Live Scan background investigation.
