Types of Classes Woodwork: An intro class that teaches students woodshop safety, how to use power tools, and create 3-4 different types of projects from scratch.
Projects include a wooden tug boat, wooden box with inset hinges, cutting board, and a wood-turned pen.
Tools include bandsaw, drill press, orbital sanders, planers, table saws, lathes, power drills, and more! Engineering: An intro to engineering and understanding concepts of building and creation of a physical materials as well as chemical reactions.
Students will be hands-on with projects such as building a toothpick tower, egg drop challenge, and stress and strain lab.
Demos include a DIY hydraulic press, DIY AC Unit, Wind Tunnel, and more! Discuss the different divisions and career options in the field of Engineering.
Electricity: An intro to electricity exploring basic terms such as direct and alternating current, electromagnet, and also create a floor plan wiring diagram, and discuss how to respond to electrical emergencies.
Projects include building a simple electrical circuit, electric motor, logic gates with batteries and switches with light bulbs.
Demos include wiring an electric bell, Leyden jar, and more! Overview of the Position Instructors implement programs in conjunction with the Program Director and BSA program standards.
An instructor serves with a major responsibility for customer service, classroom instruction, curriculum development, class/activity planning, and classroom behavior management.
Adheres to Newport Sea Base health and safety standards.
You must be at least 16 years old, be certified in CPR and First Aid, and attain your CA Boater's Card upon being hired so you can be utilized for water activities such as paddle sports outside of these classes listed.
Needs to be enthusiastic, patient, creative, and be able to engage youth effectively.
Must be comfortable communicating with children, teens, and parents.
Reports to Program Director and Education/Aquatics Coordinator.
Responsibilities/Duties Teach children the fundamentals and basic concepts of Woodwork, Engineering, and or Electricity.
Prepare and deliver lesson plans/activities to youth in a well-planned, fun and engaging manner.
Provide active supervision ensuring a safe environment for all youth.
Ensure proper set-up, usage, and clean-up of the facility, equipment, and docks.
Teach youth safety measures and procedures in each of the classes especially utilizing potentially dangerous tools and equipment Be a positive role model and mentor to youth participants.
Enforce student-discipline procedures according to Newport Sea Base policy.
Communicate thoroughly and effectively with other program staff and Lead Instructors.
Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Summer Camp Dates & Hours: June 10-August 16; Monday through Friday Varies, maximum-40 hrs.
per week Mandatory Summer Training: Track A - June 3-7 (8a-4p) OR Track B (only if still in school during Track A) May 28 (3:30p-6:30p), May 30 (3:30p-6:30p; Sailing only) & CPR First Aid Training - June 1 (9am-3:30pm) *Only take if you need to certify or if your cert expires anytime in 2024.
